5 Day Rwanda Gorilla and Akagera

After breakfast, your safari guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali and begin the journey towards Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda. The drive takes you through beautiful countryside, passing rolling hills, cultivated farmland, villages, and small trading centres before the scenery gradually changes into the savannah landscapes of Akagera. Depending on your arrival time, you can enter the park and begin an introductory game drive while making your way towards your lodge. Akagera is Rwanda's principal savannah wildlife destination, with open plains, woodland, wetlands and lakes providing habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. After checking into your accommodation, enjoy lunch and take some time to relax. In the afternoon, you can choose between a relaxed lodge experience, an additional game drive, or the Lake Ihema boat cruise, depending on your package and timing. The boat experience is particularly rewarding for seeing hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds around the lake. As the sun begins to set, return to your lodge for dinner and enjoy your first night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Wake up early and prepare for a full day of wildlife exploration inside Akagera National Park. After breakfast, set off with your professional safari guide in a 4x4 vehicle as the cooler morning hours provide excellent conditions for wildlife viewing. Your route can take you across open savannah, woodland, wetlands and the park's wildlife-rich plains while your guide searches for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and other species. Akagera is also home to the African Big Five, including lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and eastern black rhinoceroses. The drive takes you through the scenic eastern countryside, giving you another opportunity to see Rwanda's agricultural landscapes, villages and famous green hills. Once you arrive in Kigali, enjoy lunch before beginning a relaxed city experience. Depending on your interests and available time, you can visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, explore a local craft market, visit an art centre or simply enjoy the city's vibrant atmosphere. Kigali is an important cultural and historical part of the Rwanda experience, making this stop a good transition between the savannah adventure in Akagera and the gorilla experience ahead. Later, check into your hotel and relax. Your guide will brief you about the following day's transfer to Volcanoes National Park and the upcoming gorilla trek. Make sure your trekking equipment is organized, including sturdy hiking shoes, long trousers, a rain jacket, gloves and a small daypack. Enjoy dinner and rest early because tomorrow you head towards the Virunga Mountains.

After breakfast, leave Kigali and begin the scenic journey north towards Volcanoes National Park, the home of Rwanda's famous mountain gorillas. The drive takes approximately two to three hours, passing through Rwanda's beautiful rolling hills, farmland and local communities before reaching the Musanze area. As you approach the park, the impressive Virunga volcanoes begin to dominate the landscape, creating an unforgettable introduction to the gorilla region. Check into your lodge and enjoy lunch before spending the afternoon relaxing around the property. If time permits, you can choose an optional cultural experience, visit the Gorilla Guardians Village, explore the nearby area, or simply enjoy the views of the volcanic mountains. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing about tomorrow's gorilla trek, including the meeting point at Kinigi, what to wear, what to carry and how to prepare for the forest conditions. Gorilla trekking normally begins with briefing and allocation of a gorilla family at Kinigi before trekkers enter the forest with ranger guides and trackers. Spend the evening enjoying dinner at your lodge and rest early so that you are fully prepared for tomorrow's major highlight.

Wake early and enjoy breakfast before driving to Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration, briefing and allocation to your habituated gorilla family. Your ranger guides and trackers will then lead you into the beautiful montane forests of Volcanoes National Park. The trek can take several hours depending on where the assigned gorilla family is located, and the terrain may be steep, muddy and physically demanding. As you move through the forest, trackers follow signs of the gorillas while sharing information about the ecosystem and the animals you encounter along the way. Eventually, you will come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family, creating the defining moment of this five-day adventure. Watch the silverback protect the group, mothers care for their young, and juveniles play and interact naturally within the family. Gorilla visits are carefully managed, with limited visitor numbers and a restricted viewing period designed to protect the animals and minimize disturbance. After the trek, return to the park headquarters and meet your driver before heading back to your lodge for lunch and a short refreshment break. Later, begin the scenic drive back to Kigali for your departure flight or optional overnight stay.
