3 Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Safari

Uganda · Mountain gorillas · Batwa culture

Tour overview

This private Uganda gorilla trekking safari is a focused 3-day Uganda gorilla trekking road trip: a full-day mountain gorilla trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park—a UNESCO rainforest where roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live. Over three days you road-travel from Kampala or Entebbe into Uganda’s southwest, spend two nights near your assigned trekking sector, trek with UWA rangers (typically one hour with a habituated family), and return with Equator stops and photo-friendly scenery.

Gorilla permits: one permit per guest is required; fees are set by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and change on official tariff cycles—foreign non-resident permits are widely quoted around USD 800 for the standard one-hour trek (verify the exact amount and low-season offers when you book). We secure permits subject to availability for your dates.

For a deeper breakdown, see our notes on Uganda gorilla permit pricing and booking.

The route is ideal if you want a compact Bwindi gorilla safari without flying: expect scenic full days on the road (roughly 8–10 hours each transfer day), comfortable lodge nights, optional Batwa community encounters, and a classic road circuit back to Entebbe/Kampala.

Your 3-day Uganda safari, day by day

Each day below shows where you go, what you experience, and where you can stay—luxury, mid-range, and budget lodge options included.

  1. Day 1

Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your 3 Day Gorilla Trekking Safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe by your professional safari guide for a scenic journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. After a short safari briefing, you will begin the drive through Uganda’s beautiful countryside, passing bustling towns, traditional homesteads, lush green hills, terraced farmlands, and vibrant roadside markets offering fresh tropical fruits and local crafts.

Along the way, you will make a stop at the Uganda Equator crossing in Kayabwe, where you can take memorable photographs, enjoy a brief explanation of the geographical significance of the Equator, and browse souvenir shops—one of the easy Uganda safari photo stops on a Bwindi-bound route. Continue through the rolling landscapes of southwestern Uganda, with a lunch stop in Mbarara or another suitable town en route.

As the drive continues, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with winding roads leading into the mist-covered highlands that characterize the Bwindi region. Depending on your gorilla trekking sector (Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, or Nkuringo), arrival will be in the late afternoon or early evening.

After checking in at your selected lodge, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful forest atmosphere, breathtaking views, and dinner at the lodge as you prepare for the life-changing gorilla trekking adventure the following day.

  2. Day 2

Gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Wake up early for breakfast and prepare for the highlight of your safari—the unforgettable mountain gorilla trekking experience. Carry your packed lunch, enough drinking water, rain jacket, sturdy hiking boots, gloves, and camera (without flash), then transfer to the respective park headquarters for registration and briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

During the briefing, you will receive important guidance on gorilla trekking etiquette, safety measures, and what to expect while in the forest. You will then be assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family based on your fitness level and trekking preferences.

Accompanied by experienced ranger guides and trackers, begin your trek into the dense rainforest. Gorilla trekking can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family, as they move freely through the forest in search of food. The trek itself is an adventure, taking you through thick vegetation, muddy trails, steep ridges, bamboo zones, and scenic clearings, while offering opportunities to spot forest birds, monkeys, butterflies, and unique plant species.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one magical hour in their presence—an emotional and humbling wildlife encounter unlike any other. Watch the dominant silverback monitor his family, juveniles play among the vegetation, mothers care for infants, and the group interact naturally in their habitat. This close encounter with one of humanity’s closest relatives is often described as one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth.

After your allocated hour, begin the hike back to the starting point where you will receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Meet your guide and transfer back to the lodge for a well-deserved rest.

If energy permits, you may enjoy an optional Batwa cultural experience or simply relax at the lodge with panoramic forest views.

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the lodge while taking in the fresh mountain air and final views of the forested hills. Thereafter, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, once again driving through the picturesque countryside of southwestern Uganda.

Along the way, stop for lunch at a selected restaurant and, if time allows, make another brief stop at the Equator for refreshments, souvenir shopping, or photography.
