6 Day Rwanda Primates Tour

After breakfast, meet your safari guide and begin the scenic journey from Kigali towards Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests. The journey takes you through Rwanda's famous rolling hills, rural communities, tea plantations and beautiful mountain landscapes before reaching the Nyungwe region. The forest is home to chimpanzees and numerous other primate species, making it one of the most important stops on this primate-focused adventure. Along the way, make suitable stops for photography and lunch before continuing towards your lodge. As you approach Nyungwe, the landscape becomes increasingly forested and mountainous, creating an exciting transition from Rwanda's urban environment into the heart of the Albertine Rift. Check into your lodge and spend the afternoon relaxing after the long drive. If time permits, you can enjoy a short nature walk, tea experience or simply take in the forest scenery. Your guide will brief you about the early start required for tomorrow's chimpanzee tracking. Enjoy dinner and rest early because chimpanzee tracking begins very early in the morning.

Wake before sunrise for one of the biggest highlights of the safari—chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest. Chimpanzee tracking begins early because the animals are particularly active in the morning, and the trek can last from around an hour to several hours depending on where the chimpanzees are located. After a briefing, enter the ancient rainforest with experienced trackers who will help you follow the movements and calls of the chimpanzee community. You may hear their loud vocalizations echoing through the forest before you actually see them moving through the trees. As you track them, keep an eye out for other primates including colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and L'Hoest's monkeys. Once the chimpanzees are located, you can observe their natural behavior as they feed, climb, communicate and interact with one another. After the permitted viewing time, trek back through the forest and return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. The afternoon can be used for a gentle nature walk, tea plantation experience or simply enjoying the peaceful forest surroundings. After breakfast, head into Nyungwe for the spectacular Canopy Walkway experience. Suspended high above the rainforest, the walkway provides a completely different perspective of the forest, allowing you to look across the treetops while spotting birds, butterflies, monkeys and other wildlife. Lake Kivu's emerald waters and surrounding mountains provide a wonderful change of scenery from the dense rainforest. Enjoy dinner overlooking the lake and relax for the evening.

After breakfast, leave Lake Kivu and continue north towards Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The drive takes you through spectacular highland scenery as you move towards Musanze and the Virunga Mountains. Lake Kivu's northern town of Rubavu is only about an hour from Volcanoes National Park, making it a convenient stop on the route. Depending on your exact accommodation location, the journey can take several hours. Along the way, enjoy views of terraced hills, farms, villages and the dramatic volcanic landscape. Arrive in the Volcanoes region and check into your lodge for lunch. The afternoon can be used for a cultural experience, a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village, a gentle community walk, or simply relaxation at the lodge. Your guide will also provide a detailed briefing for tomorrow's gorilla trekking experience and help you prepare your trekking equipment. Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Massif and offers both gorilla and golden monkey tracking. Enjoy dinner surrounded by the peaceful volcanic landscape and rest early ahead of tomorrow's trek.

Today brings the ultimate primate experience as you encounter mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park. Because gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking each require dedicated time, the exact order can be arranged according to permit availability and the operator's confirmed schedule. For the gorilla experience, wake early and head to the Kinigi headquarters for registration and briefing before entering the forest with experienced ranger guides and trackers. The trek can be challenging, with steep and sometimes muddy terrain, but the reward is an unforgettable encounter with a habituated gorilla family. Watch the silverback, mothers and juveniles as they feed, groom, rest and interact naturally. After returning from the forest, enjoy lunch and some time to recover. If scheduled for the same day, the golden monkey experience can be arranged as the second primate activity; otherwise, the itinerary can place golden monkey tracking on Day 6. Golden monkeys are found in Volcanoes National Park and are tracked from the Kinigi area. The experience is different from gorilla trekking because the golden monkeys are much more active, often moving rapidly through bamboo and forest vegetation. Return to the lodge for dinner and your final night in the Volcanoes region.

After breakfast, complete your final primate activity with golden monkey tracking if it was not completed on Day 5. Head to the Kinigi headquarters for briefing before entering the bamboo and montane forests in search of a habituated golden monkey group. These energetic primates are known for their striking golden coats and fast-moving behavior, making the tracking experience lively and very different from the slower-paced gorilla encounter. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and refreshment before beginning your journey back to Kigali. The drive takes you through Rwanda's famous green hills and countryside, giving you one final opportunity to appreciate the scenery that has defined the journey. Depending on your departure flight, you can make a short stop in Kigali for souvenirs or a final city experience before heading to the airport.
