10-Day Uganda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari

Your safari begins with your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, where you will be welcomed by your safari representative and professional driver-guide.

After completing immigration procedures and collecting your luggage, you'll meet your guide outside the arrivals area and begin the short transfer to your hotel.

Unlike the following days, there is no long-distance safari drive today. The day is intentionally kept relaxed because you may be arriving after a long international flight.

Depending on your arrival time, you can simply relax at the hotel, enjoy dinner and prepare for the adventure ahead.

If you arrive early enough, you can optionally explore a little of Entebbe, visit the lakeside area or simply enjoy the hotel facilities.

After an early breakfast, your Uganda wildlife safari officially begins.

Today you'll leave Entebbe or Kampala and travel north toward Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest national park and one of the country's most important wildlife destinations. Murchison Falls National Park is officially listed among Uganda's protected areas by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The drive takes you through Uganda's countryside, with opportunities to see local villages, farms, roadside markets and changing landscapes as you move farther north.

Depending on your departure point and route, you can make a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for optional rhino tracking, although this would add additional time to the journey and should be planned in advance.

Continue toward Murchison Falls, arriving later in the afternoon.

If time permits, you can enjoy a short game drive on the way to your lodge, giving you your first opportunity to see animals such as giraffes, antelopes, buffaloes and elephants.

Check into your lodge, enjoy dinner and relax.

Wake early for breakfast before heading into the park for a morning game drive.

This is one of the best times to explore Murchison Falls because wildlife is often active during the cooler hours of the morning.

Your guide will search the savannah for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeest, waterbucks and other antelope species.

With some luck, you may encounter lions, while leopards are also present in the park although sightings are less predictable.

After the morning game drive, return to the lodge for lunch and some relaxation.

Later in the afternoon, head to the Nile for a boat cruise toward the base of Murchison Falls.

The cruise provides a completely different perspective of the park. Along the riverbanks you can see large concentrations of hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants and numerous water birds.

As the boat approaches the falls, the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging downstream, creating one of Uganda's most spectacular natural scenes.

Murchison Falls is highlighted by Uganda's tourism authorities as a major attraction, with the Nile cruise offering views of hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds.

Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

After breakfast, leave Murchison Falls and begin the long journey toward western Uganda.

Today is primarily a transfer day, but it is also an opportunity to experience Uganda's changing scenery.

You will travel from the northern savannah landscapes toward the greener landscapes around Fort Portal and Kibale.

The contrast is impressive: the dry/open landscapes around Murchison gradually give way to agricultural areas, rolling hills and lush vegetation.

Depending on the timing, you can stop for lunch along the way before continuing to Kibale.

Arrive at your lodge later in the afternoon or evening.

Kibale is famous for its primate population and is one of the major chimpanzee destinations on a Uganda safari.

Have dinner and rest in preparation for the following day's chimpanzee trek.

Wake early and enjoy breakfast before heading to the chimpanzee tracking headquarters.

After registration and briefing, you'll enter Kibale Forest accompanied by trained guides.

The trek takes you into the rainforest as you search for chimpanzee communities.

Your guide and trackers will follow signs of chimpanzee activity, including calls, nests and movements through the forest.

Once the chimpanzees are located, you'll have the opportunity to observe their behavior in their natural environment.

You may see them feeding, grooming, climbing trees, communicating with each other or moving through the forest canopy.

Kibale also supports several other primate species, making the forest particularly rewarding for wildlife and photography enthusiasts.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch.

The afternoon can be kept free for relaxation or an optional Bigodi Wetland and community experience.

After breakfast, leave Kibale and continue south toward .

The transfer is considerably shorter than the previous day's journey, giving you enough time to enjoy the destination rather than spending the entire day on the road.

As you approach Queen Elizabeth, the landscape changes again, with open savannah, crater landscapes and views toward the Rwenzori Mountains in some areas.

After arriving at your lodge and having lunch, head out for an afternoon game drive.

Your guide will explore wildlife-rich areas in search of elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, waterbucks, warthogs and other animals.

Lions may also be encountered in the park, while leopards are present but more elusive.

Queen Elizabeth is one of Uganda's major wildlife parks and is known for species including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, lions and other savannah wildlife.

Rather than rushing away from Queen Elizabeth, today is dedicated entirely to exploring the park.

Wake early and have breakfast before heading out for a morning game drive.

The cooler morning hours give you a good opportunity to search for active wildlife across the savannah.

Your guide will explore areas such as the Kasenyi plains, searching for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, antelopes, warthogs and other wildlife.

The morning also provides another opportunity to search for lions.

After several hours of game viewing, return to your lodge for lunch and some relaxation.

In the afternoon, you can choose between another game drive or an optional Kazinga Channel boat cruise.

If wildlife photography is your priority, another game drive allows you to explore areas you may not have visited in the morning.

Alternatively, the Kazinga Channel cruise offers a completely different perspective, particularly for viewing hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds.

The boat cruise is kept optional, so the itinerary doesn't force it on travelers who would rather spend the afternoon on a game drive or relaxing at the lodge.

After breakfast, leave Queen Elizabeth and begin the scenic journey toward .

This is one of the most beautiful transitions of the safari as you leave the open savannah and gradually move into the mountainous landscapes of southwestern Uganda.

The journey takes you through rolling hills, local communities and cultivated countryside before reaching the forested mountains around Bwindi.

The exact route depends on the gorilla trekking sector indicated on your permit.

Bwindi has four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, so accommodation should always be booked according to the sector where your trek will take place.

Arrive at your lodge and check in.

The rest of the afternoon is deliberately relaxed. You can enjoy the lodge surroundings, prepare your trekking equipment and receive any final information from your guide.

Have dinner and get an early rest because the following day is the highlight of the entire journey.

After an early breakfast, you'll head to the appropriate gorilla trekking headquarters according to the sector specified on your permit.

After registration and a briefing from the ranger guides, you'll begin your trek into Bwindi's ancient rainforest.

The trek can be physically demanding because the terrain is mountainous, with steep slopes, dense vegetation and sometimes muddy trails.

Your trackers will follow signs of the gorilla family's movements and guide you through the forest.

The duration of the trek depends on where the gorillas are located that day.

When you finally encounter the gorilla family, you'll have the opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat.

You might see a powerful silverback watching over the group, mothers caring for infants, juveniles playing or gorillas feeding among the vegetation.

The experience is very different from a conventional safari because you're walking through the forest rather than viewing wildlife from a vehicle.

After your permitted viewing time, begin the trek back to the park headquarters.

Return to the lodge for lunch and a well-earned rest.

No demanding afternoon activity is necessary. This is your opportunity to relax, reflect on the experience and enjoy your final evening in the Bwindi region.

After breakfast, begin your journey back toward Entebbe or Kampala.

This is a long final transfer if completed entirely by road, so the departure schedule needs to be coordinated carefully with your international flight.

You'll travel through southwestern Uganda, passing through changing landscapes as you gradually leave the mountainous region.

Depending on your flight time, you can make short stops for refreshments and lunch along the way.

A stop at the Uganda Equator can also be incorporated if your flight schedule allows enough time.

However, I wouldn't make the Equator stop compulsory for a traveler with an early international flight. Getting the client to Entebbe comfortably and on time should remain the priority.

For travelers with late evening flights, the road transfer can be arranged with an appropriate departure time.
