10 Day Best of Uganda Safari

Touch down at Entebbe International Airport and meet your Adventure in the Wild safari host for a private transfer to your lakeshore hotel. Entebbe is the gentle landing pad after long-haul flying: warmer air, fruit bats at dusk, and Lake Victoria stretching toward the horizon. Unpack, rest, and—if arrival time allows—stretch your legs in the botanical gardens or along the waterfront.

In the evening your guide walks through the ten days ahead: permit checks for chimps and gorillas, packing for both savannah dust and forest humidity, and realistic timings for the northern and southwestern transfer days. Dinner is unhurried; tomorrow the Best of Uganda circuit begins in earnest.

After an early breakfast, drive north through Uganda’s central farmlands. Midway, stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided foot track of southern white rhinos—the country’s successful reintroduction story and often your first Big Five tick. Rangers set a quiet pace; keep cameras ready but movements calm as you close on grazing animals in tall grass.

Continue to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest protected area, where the Victoria Nile squeezes through a rock cleft before exploding into the Devil’s Cauldron. Cross by ferry where required and settle into a Nile-side or savannah lodge as afternoon light softens. An evening game drive may already turn up elephants, Uganda kob, oribi, and giraffe on the northern bank plains.

Dawn game drive across the northern savannah: lion and leopard are possible; buffalo herds move between river and plains; birds of prey hang on thermals. Your guide works the tracks methodically—Murchison rewards patience more than rushing between viewpoints.

After lunch, board a launch cruise up the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls. Hippos stack in pods, Nile crocodiles haul out on sandbanks, and kingfishers, bee-eaters, and African fish eagles work the banks. Spray and thunder grow as you near the rock choke that gives the park its name. Return to lodge for sundowners and a second-night dinner on the river corridor.

Begin with a short visit to the Top of the Falls—walkways where the Nile forces itself through roughly seven metres of rock before cascading toward the Albertine Rift. It is loud, slippery after rain, and worth every careful step.

Then turn southwest via the Hoima corridor toward Fort Portal and Kibale National Park. It is a full transfer day (commonly 7–9 hours), rewarded by cooler crater-lake air and forest-edge lodging. If timing allows, pause at a viewpoint lake in the Ndali–Kasenda field before check-in. Evening briefing for tomorrow’s chimpanzee trek; unpack wet-weather layers and broken-in boots.

After an early breakfast, transfer to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for registration and the UWA ranger briefing. Kibale National Park protects one of Africa’s densest chimpanzee populations—plus red colobus, black-and-white colobus, red-tailed monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys among roughly a dozen primate species. Led by trackers, you follow pant-hoot calls through mixed tropical forest. Trek length varies (commonly 2–5+ hours); once the party reaches a habituated group, you typically spend one hour observing feeding, grooming, and social behaviour at the regulated distance.

Return to the lodge for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, join a community guide for a walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. The Magombe swamp boardwalks and village trails are excellent for additional primates, swamp birds such as great blue turaco and papyrus gonolek, and butterfly photography. Bigodi is community-managed—your visit supports local livelihoods beside the park.

Drive south into the Albertine Rift and Queen Elizabeth National Park, skirting the Rwenzori outlines on clear days. Enter via sectors toward the Kasenyi plains or Mweya peninsula depending on lodge placement. Afternoon or evening game drive among Uganda kob leks—prime lion hunting ground—plus elephant, buffalo, and warthog on open grassland.

Settle into a lodge with crater or channel views. Queen Elizabeth is classic East African savannah with a volcanic twist: explosion craters, Ishasha fig woodland still ahead, and the Kazinga Channel linking Lakes George and Edward.

Morning on the Kasenyi tracks: lions on kob, hyena, and elephant corridors; birders should watch for martial eagles and seasonal migrants. After lunch, board the famous Kazinga Channel launch—one of Africa’s densest hippo and waterbird concentrations, with elephants often drinking at the shoreline and buffalo in wallows.

Late afternoon light on Mweya peninsula or crater rims is excellent for photography. Dinner at lodge; rest well—tomorrow combines Ishasha’s tree lions with the climb into Bwindi’s mist forest.

Cross into the southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth, famous for lions that loaf in fig trees—never guaranteed, always worth the search along riverine woodland. Continue south as farmland and tea give way to the dark green wall of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage afromontane forest and home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

Check into a sector-matched lodge (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo) aligned with your trekking permit. Evening briefing covers trek etiquette, porter option, and fitness expectations. Sleep early; tomorrow is the emotional centrepiece of the safari.

Early transfer to park headquarters for registration and the UWA ranger briefing. Assigned to a habituated family, you hike under guide and tracker leadership through steep, muddy, root-tangled forest. Difficulty varies with the day’s gorilla movements—some groups are close; others demand hours of climbing.

Once contact is made you typically spend one precious hour with the family: silverback presence, females feeding, juveniles tumbling through vines. Keep the mandated distance, speak softly, and let the encounter unfold. After returning for lunch and a shower, drive the highland roads toward Lake Bunyonyi—a short scenic transfer (commonly 1–3 hours depending on sector). The lake sits in a drowned volcanic crater ringed by steep terraced hills and dotted with more than twenty islands. Afternoon at leisure: optional dugout canoe, a swim in cool highland water, or simply a deck chair watching weavers over papyrus.
